Lightning and thunderbolt is static electricity discharges. Lightning discharges are one cloud to another cloud, thunderbolt is a cloud discharges to the surface of the earth.
What we see is the flash of light and we know that light travels at 300,000 miles per second, which can be considered as instantaneous.
After the lightning, thunder is produced by the spark of electric shock. Sound travels three kmtrs in 1 second, and 6 miles in a second.
If you want to know the approximate distance of a lightning or thunderbolt, We will:
Seeing lightning or thunderbolt, start counting the seconds until you hear thunder. The number of seconds obtained multiply them by 3 and we get the approximate distance in Kilometers. If we multiply the number of seconds for 6, we obtain the approximate distance in miles.
A trick is to count seconds count saying one mississippi, 2 mississippi, 3 Miss ... Etc.
